The Basic Guide to Understanding Options and Technical Analysis: And Strategies for Their Use
Published in Paperback by 1stBooks Library (November, 2002)
Author: Thomas H. Yarborough
Average review score:

WOW EVEN I CAN MAKE MONEY
I was so down about the stock market. Just could not win. After reading Mr. Yarborough's book, making money became so easy. The book taught me how to analysis a stock in terms that I could understand. Not a bunch of mumbo jumbo. And more importantly, how to add to my profits by selling the options. It is a must read for anyone who is just sick and tired of lossing money.

TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT
I was a skeptic but have been converted. Already this year I have been paid $...FOR CALLS THAT i HAVE SOLD AND i STILL OWN THE UNDERLYING STOCK. Not too bad for beginner.
My advise read the book at least 3-times then call Tom Yarborough and put your toe in the water. See how you like it [bet you will]
Jim Atkins
Tallahassee Florida

the book covers both options and technical analysis
I was thinking of buying a book on options and one on technical analysis but this covered all bases. It was so easy to understand and I have read other books on options but had a hard time grasping the subject. I am using the strategies now.

The Battle in Seattle: The Story Behind and Beyond the Wto Demonstrations
Published in Paperback by Fulcrum Pub (June, 2003)
Author: Janet Thomas
Average review score:

What Was At Stake In Seattle And Beyond?
To the surprise and amazement of most Americans, the events of November 1999 in Seattle came like a lightning bolt out of nowhere. Since the electronic media had done little to inform the average TV viewer of what the World Trade Organization (WTO) was, or what they would be trying to accomplish in their convention in Seattle, no one understood or appreciated the collection of concerns, misgivings, and grievances the protestors were there to use in way of ammunition for making the WTO stand up and take notice. Within a few days, we were all holding our breath.

Not since the heady days of the 1960s, or on a smaller scale, the No-Nukes movement of the late 1970s had such passion, conviction, or energy been thrust into the equation of public politics than was done over that short period of time in Seattle. And here to give us a up-close and personal description as well as a cogent interpretation of those days of confrontation is author Janet Thomas, who, by taking a participant-observer role, attempts to describe, from inside the ranks of the protestors, who they are and why they are confronting the WTO and the forces of economic globalization it represents.

This is a hardly an objective, dispassionate, or even look at the events that transpired over the spate of several days in and around Seattle . Yet in its urgency, passion, and position-taking the reader comes to understand, at least from the myriad of organizations participating in the demonstrations, the reasons for their activities. Given the media's proclivities to dismissing any such protest as the work of mindless anarchists or social, political, and economic trouble-makers, this more introspective approach is a breath of fresh air. Thomas describes the reasoning of the protestors in terms of their concerns for the social, economic, and political costs associated with globalism. As happened with Chicago in 1968, the forces of the organized society seem to all accrue to those in power such as the WWTO, and the citizens are left to explain their actions and their motives between the margins, since the media is seemingly uninterested in their politics or their issues. All the media wanted to concentrate on was the violence, which makes great TV, and requires little explanation.

Thus, by giving voice to the myriad of different organizations involved in the demonstrations, Thomas helps the reader to understand their motives in performing such acts of civil disobedience as well as the issues themselves much better. In this she performs a yeoman service to the general public, who certainly needs to understand the particulars of the issues much better if they are to ever appreciate the terrible danger organizations like the WTO potentially represent. Anyone interested in the ways in which economic globalism works, and the ways in which we each can act to constrain, block, or modify their efforts to encroach on our liberties should read this interesting and well-written book. Enjoy!

All the news the media didn't let us see
Informative detail of just what the agenda of the Seattle and later, the Ottawa protestors wish to accomplish. The TV news doesn't tell us about WTO rules supercedeing laws enacted in Massachusetts. The TV news does not tell the story of the prison-factories in El Salvador. The TV news avoids telling us about the man that makes $104,000 per hour while his Haitian workers make 13 cents per hour. Janet Thomas does. And she also tells us why the TV news skips the real story, because it is controlled by the same people.

While the TV news avoids the story of thousands of peaceful demonstrators attempting to make sure sovereignty and democracy survive the WTO, it concentrates on a handful of violent demonstrators who get out of hand. Janet Thomas tells the story straight.

The truth behind the media's version of WTO protests
The truth is hard to take when you realize you are part of a system that does not serve the basic needs of so many around the globe. This book seeks to go beyond the media's focus on a small number of anarchistic acts in Seattle's WTO week. It both reveals and explores in depth the real issues at the base of this 50,000 person protest. Thomas' approach is both scholarly and undogmatic. Individual sketches serve to break down denial in readers such as myself, readers who start out not really wanting to hear the truth. The bonus: at the end, you are not left feeling hopeless. Thomas has compiled a rich and extensive list of resources to further research the information and ideas expressed in her book. If you are interested in learning about world economic justice, read this book.

Battleships: United States Battleships, 1935-1992
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (April, 1995)
Authors: William H., Jr. Garzke, Robert O. Dulin, and Thomas G. Webb
Average review score:

As detailed and exacting as can be
Every major class of battleship is described in meticulous detail. From design to outcome this book has it all.

Be warned, this book also contains extensive technical information, so if you are interested in narrative storytelling look elsewhere. This book is for the true devotee of battleships.

Good Book!
Quite a bit of detail about each individual ship organized in sections on a ship-by-ship basis. Lots of good photos and drawings.

If you don't have this book, you are NOT a Battleship person
Bill Garzke and Bob Dulin have outdone themselves again. When I was the structural project leader to direct the hull and armor redesigns for the reactivation of the Battleship NEW JERSEY at Long Beach Naval Shipyard (the planning yard for the Battleships), we used their earlier edition of this book as our general guide. Two members of my design team brought in their personal copies and kept them handy so I could include excerpts from them for official Navy memos and instructions. The Naval archives were sorely lacking detailed chemical and heat treating records of the Class A and Class B armor of the Battleships. A quick phone call to Bill Garzke gave me an armor expert on the west coast that had all the data our designers and welding engineers needed. Thanks, Bill. I owe you one. The only thing I have found missing from this edition is the fantastic Gibbs & Cox scheme D Battleship that was half Battleship and half Aircraft Carrier and was actually bought by the Soviet Union in WW II, but never built. In this edition, perhaps the most important section is the one devoted to the disasterous incident of turret II on the IOWA where 47 men were killed. The authors go into meticulous detail as to actual facts and almost every conceivable theory as to what caused the deflageration (not an explosion). However, they are properly cautious as not to force their personal opinions on the reader. Yet they give enough detail, including histories of past turret incidents on other Battleships, so the reader can draw his own conclusions. There are a few typos and descrepancies between the text and the illustrations. For example, the text correctly identifies the powder in the propellent bags as D846 where the illustrations identify it as B846. Also, the elevation sketch indicates that the heavily armored turret bustle hatch was blown off when in fact it was the turret bustle hatch ACCESS PLATFORM below the bustle (overhang) that was blown over the side. But these are miniscule descrepancies only an "insider" like me would know (I was tasked to write a repair procedure). All in all, it is unthinkable that any true Battleship historian or lover would be without this book. Actually, both the 1976 and this 1995 edition should be in every Naval Architect's library. Baywatch Beach Shots: The Junior Lifeguard Photo Album (Baywatch)

Authors: Baywatch Production Company, Jim Thomas, and Baywatch Production
Average review score:

A very good book!!
I think this book was a very good book. It had alot of very good pictures in it. I expessially like the ones of Cody, he's so hot. I all so like how they based the book on pictures that Hobie took. I all so like how they made it seem that the Baywatch team is so close.

The Best Book
I loved this book because I can't go one day without seeing my favorite show. I watch Baywatch because I think it teaches kids how to save lives. I hope every Baywatch fan gets a chance to see this book!

I never thought it would work as a book--but it does!
They say that the book is always better than the movie--well, in this case, the book is even better than the TV show! The brilliant character development, heartstring-pulling drama and (va-va-voom!) delicious romance that once made Baywatch the world's #1 TV show have been pulled together into this award-winning Junior Lifeguard Photo Album! (Well, I don't know if it's really award-winning, but it SHOULD be!)

Honestly, we're not talking about "character development" or "plot" here--we're talking about bazoombas! Big ones! And lots of 'em! Of your very own junior lifeguard! What could be better?

I don't know if it really is the dream of every young girl to make millions of dollars by having grotesquely large billybobs (although it certainly was mine), but this Junior Photo Album will make that dream come alive

Bears' Guide to the Best Education Degrees by Distance Learning
Published in Paperback by Ten Speed Press (January, 2003)
Authors: John Bear, Mariah Bear, Tom Head, and Thomas Nixon
Average review score:

Want to earn an Education degree via distance learning?
I have a few of John Bear's books in my study and this book is a terrific publication. If you would like to earn your Education degree via distance learning...this is the book for you. You will find its authors have compiled an excellent resource pointing you in the right direction. Plenty of information is given concerning specific state certification and how you can navigate the need for student teaching via distance learning.

Buy this book if you are serious about earning an education degree!

For anyone interest in the education field
You can trust Bear to give you acurate, honest information on the schools he covers. This book is specifically written for anyone looking for a degree in the education field. Childhood development, elementary, ect. He covers it all including teaching credentuals, bachelor's degreees, master's degrees, and doctorates. I've bought other distance learning books but it's hard to go through each school looking not only for creditionals you can trust but also for the degree you want. I like the fact that this book only covers the type of degrees I'm interested in. Bear's also has several other distance degree books if education is not your field of study.

Excellent Distance Learning Resource
Dr. John Bear has once again provided the distance learner with an excellent resource volume. This newest addition to the Bears' Guide collection is a must have for those interested in educational programs via distance learning. Co-authored by Mariah Bear, Tom Head and Thomas Nixon, "Bears' Guide to the Best Education Degrees" profiles over 350 fully accredited distance learning credential and degree programs, ranging from the bachelor's through the doctorate. An entire chapter is devoted to meeting teacher licensing requirements, along with contact information for all fifty states.

As in previous editions, the value and importance of a properly accredited degree is discussed. Since degree mills have become problematic, both in the US and abroad, a degree from a properly accredited school is essential. Accreditation by an agency recognized by the US Dept. of Education, or its foreign equivalent, assures broad utility and recognition of a degree. By profiling only schools with this type of accreditation, Bear provides the distance learner with credible, legitimate and substantive options.

Several specific areas are detailed in terms of degree emphasis and specialization, e.g., administration, educational technology, religious education, library science, special education, distance education, K-12 and early childhood education, curriculum, etc.

Without reservation, this book is recommended for anyone interested in distance learning educational programs, as well as for reference use.

Beginning PHP4 Databases
Published in Paperback by Wrox Press Inc (October, 2002)

Average review score:

It really helped!!
Do not wish to use too many words. I can just say that this book was of great help to me. Though dabbling with PHP, I learnt a lot from the book, since it has dealt with lot of basic knowledge of databases. Was just the right one for a student like me who had very little knowledge of the databases. Kudos to the authors!!

Great book for newbies!!
I just got a copy of this book last week, and this was exactly the content that i was in search of - Getting upto speed with PHP and databases, to build robust database driven web applications.
Infact, this book manages to provide solutions to the large number of problems that newbie PHP programmers post on sites like phpbeginners.com,php.net and phpbuilder.
The approach to presenting a database agnostic solution, through the use of the most recommended PEAR::DB abstraction layer (i even found documentation about PEAR::DB, that i had spent ages figuring out for myself) sets this book in a class of its own.
The typos and grammar stand out at places, but who cares when you have gotten what you wanted.
I highly recommend this book to the BEGINNING/NEWBIE PHP Programmer.

Great!
This book aims to teach the skills necessary to develop any size web application with PHP, backed by a database. They start off with the now de facto PHP introduction and then jump head first into database fundamentals. Nearly half of this book is devoted to teaching database layout, design, and use. This is long over due in the PHP community. Too many PHP developers are creating database enabled applications that have absolutely no prior experience with databases! This book covers everything from elementary topics, such as table creation, selects, inserts, and deletes, to advanced database usage with joins, stored procedures, triggers, and cursors. While they did cover indexing, I feel that it was a bit lacking and could have used a more in depth exploration.

One pleasant surprise was that no one particular database is favored; in fact use of the database abstraction layer in PEAR is encouraged for code portability. I am encouraged by the use of PEAR in this book, as it can only help to bring the community together in its use and promote PEAR as a standard of sorts. The PEAR database abstraction layer is picked apart so that you may understand exactly how it works and be that much more efficient with using it.

At the end of this book, it offers two chapters dedicated to designing and implementing applications using a native XML database. The first of the two chapters concentrates on the fundamentals of native XML databases; what they are and how they work. The second chapter then presents a case study using Xindice.

I found this book to be very thorough and well put together. Cheers to Wrox for another fine book!

The Bench
Published in Hardcover by Vantage Press (October, 2000)
Author: Thomas E. Brennan
Average review score:

East Lansing reader
I thoroughly enjoyed The Bench. It kept me in suspense. I liked everything about it, thought it grabbed the reader's attention quickly and held it throughout. The characters were developed beautifully and the interactions forming a successful working body were fascinating. The descriptions of the court reflected insights of one who had been there. I have recommended it to friends and family alike.

The Bench
Intriguing story about the Michigan Supreme Court justices and their on the Bench stories and their fascinating behind the scenes stories. It was especially fun to see in print the names of streets, cities, and buildings that I would recognize as someone who lives in Michigan.

The Bench - Outstanding!
What a great book! The Bench tells the story of eight fictional Michigan Supreme Court Justices both in and out of the court room. My favorite story line was of Edward Breitner, the long time Chief Justice that is ousted from his seat by Freshman Justice Jim Malloy on his first day!

The author, Thomas Brennan, is retired from the Michgian Supreme Court. The knowledge he has of the innerworking and politicing that goes on in the office makes for a very credible and beleivable story.

If you like Grisham ... you will love Brennan!!

Best American Crime Writing (Best American Crime Reporting)
Published in Hardcover by Pantheon Books (13 August, 2002)
Authors: Otto Penzler, Thomas H. Cook, and Nicholas Pileggi
Average review score:

Best american Crime Writing
An excellent collection with great writing. Edgy, evocative, atomshpereic with fully developed character studies that are made even more fascinating by the fact that these are real people and events. The crime reporters explore the conjunction of everyday life and the many faces of pathology. Could not stop reading; can't wait for the next edition.

A Rare Gem In The Genre!
Although I'm a fan of true crime, most of the genre doesn't meet my standards. Too often I find that it focuses on the criminal and the macabre, gruesome, or sensational aspect of whatever story is being told and appeals to a certain prurience which I find distasteful. Often, the victims are forgotten or neglected in favor of the criminal, whose story may be more interesting or titillating. This remarkable collection, however, includes only well-told stories from respectable publications. Most of the 17 stories are riveting and will linger with you long after you've finished the book. These are true human interest stories which never ignore the real tragedies involved. Kudos to the editors for managing to find such quality stories. I can't wait for the next edition!

Excellent Book!!
This book is a wonderful read!! It contains 17 articles written in the past year by excellent journalists from various magazines such as: GQ, SPIN, THE NEW YORKER, ATLANTIC MONTHLY, ESQUIRE, VANITY FAIR and more. The variety makes it nice because you get to read different styles of writing by different authors on different subjects. The subjects too are a variety in range: "The Cheerleaders" focuses on a town in New York hit by tragedy after tragedy; "A Prayer For Tina Marie" is a wonderful article about a woman who murdered her two kids in an unthinkable way (much worse than Andrea Yates); "Flesh and Blood" is about the murder-for-hire by pro football player Rae Carruth... AND MUCH MORE!! With such quality of writing, you don't want to miss this book. I am really hoping that more of these will be published!!

Beyond the Conscious Mind: Unlocking the Secrets of the Self
Published in Hardcover by Perseus Publishing (May, 1996)
Author: Thomas R. Blakeslee
Average review score:

Could not put it down, great book.
This book is probably one of the most interesting books I have read. It is easy to read and revolutionary at the same time. I stumbled across this book at the University of Arizona College Book Store. Otherwise, I would never have found it. I am completely baffled as to why this book is currently out of print. If you have any interest in psychology, this book is an absolutely must read! If you do not read this book, you are missing something very important.

Enriching, Accessible and Thought-Provoking
Our beliefs may be false (a revelation which had a profound impact on me) and the accuracy of our powers of introspection may be suspect, but our emotions are logical (!) and we can think and communicate non-verbally, not to mention the creative powers we have left untapped. I wish this had been the textbook for my high school psychology class.

Right from page 1 the author has his work cut out for him: explaining the self-organizing nature of the brain and what this means for our consciousness. Blakeslee does this brilliantly with numerous examples of self-organizing systems (like a beehive) that even a non-scientist can understand. Without getting bogged down in technical descriptions or getting lost down philosophical dead-ends, Blakeslee introduces us to our "self module", only one among many talents at our disposal. After describing what this language-bound module can do (and what it can't do, but other modules can), he masterfully applies this knowledge to our everyday lives: our emotions, education, beliefs, our children, sports, music, and creativity.

The book lives up to its name, because I have never read another book on consciousness which really introduces you to nonverbal thinking, a large and thought-provoking chapter in the book. From the famous Libet "consciousness time-lag" experiment, Blakeslee bravely follows the ramifications this presents for the self module, and reveals the equally disconcerting possibilities it holds beyond the conscious mind.

Amazing, Revealing,
This is a book that gives the final picture after you have thought so much about this issue. And explains so much else with it. I have some questions also; In one of the chapters the author says that 98% of the time the self module is not "on". My questions are: What decides if one of the modules is "on" or "off"? Is it some kind of "marker" telling that either the self module is on or off? What if the self module is not "on", is it still "running somewhere else"? By the way; is the author planning a new book about the modules role in dreaming? Thanks

Bib My Utmost Devotional Bible New King James Version
Published in Hardcover by Thomas Nelson (December, 1997)
Author: Thomas Nelson Publishers
Average review score:

Excellent Daily Reading
I found a paperback version on sale at a christian bookstore. It was their only and last copy. So I snatched it up. I am very fond of the New King James Version and I love reading it everyday. Each section offers a bit from the O.T. as well as the N.T. Over a year one should have been through the whole Bible. I am still in the process of reading and am very eager to discover a balanced view of who Yaweh and Y'shua really are. Reading Oswald Chamber's viewpoints are inspiring as well. That man obviously loved the Lord with all his heart, soul, mind and strength. I would very much like to find a hardcover version.

Great Bible to Read with Your Spouse
Do you want to read the Bible but think you don't have time with your busy schedules? We have read this Bible for several years and each year I think maybe we should read a different one but we always come back to this one. As a couple, we find the message for each day and the mix of Old Testament, New Testament, Proverbs and Psalms an easy way to kick off our day. With a fresh brewed cup of coffee and a dose of age old wisdom, it sets the tone for our whole day. Reading the Bible together and praying together in the mornings before work has changed our marriage. Try reading it with your spouse and hang on for the adventure of a lifetime. The prayer is important too! We are buying 2 more copies for friends and a new hardbound one for us. The old has been used so much it is falling apart! Each time we read it, we learn something new about our situation or relationship.

This makes reading the entire Bible attainable & fun.
This is the greatest version I've come across yet. It is easy to do every day, it didn't bog me down in the legalistics of the Old Testament as I always felt when I was just reading the Bible through, and the words of Oswald Chambers are always so meaningful. It is such a blessing!

If you want to get a lot of meaning out of your Bible or just want a devotional book to do each day that only takes about 1/2 hr per day, this book is for you, and the paperback is easy to carry with you.
